Ashridge Court, North Tawton, Devon, 1927
An historic manor house rebuilt 1800. Purchased in 2012, with its 400 acre estate, for £2 million, by Chris Richards and his wife Carolyn, "both from farming backgrounds, who had spent time in Japan". They demolished the servants’ quarters and the high-ceilinged billiards room, which comprised most of the east segment of the house, and replaced it with the "East Pavilion", a modern Japanese-style "massive kitchen-dining room and a small separate office". "A brazenly fatuous faux-Elizabethan belvedere, perched on top of the main entrance portico like a cuckoo, was removed to create a simple timber-floored balcony for the main south-facing bedroom".( "Ashridge, a medieval manor house. A new house was built in 1800, the old building becoming the farm. However, the carved oak beams from the old hall were brought into the kitchen roof of the new house. An old horse threshing machine was in the barn. First reference to the manor circa 1380 (fulford williams)" ( ). Wood of Ashridge in the parish of North Tawton, Devon: Originally "At Woode", descended from Richard At Woode of Ashridge and his wife Jone Champernowne, 3rd daughter of Oliver Champer
