Detail of the Old Chapel at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, by Carol M. Highsmith, 2019 - master-pnp-highsm-57600-57656a

Detail of the Old Chapel at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, the flagship campus of the state university's system in Amherst, Massachusetts. Formerly known as the Old Chapel Library, the building, unhabited since 1996 (as of 2019) due to safety concerns, was constructed in Richardson Romanesque-style between 1884 and 1887. Designed by architect Stephen C. Earle, it is constructed primarily of granite with sandstone trim and a slate roof. The tower features an open belfry with rounded arches, above which are gabled peaks with clock faces, and a diagonally set four-sided steeple.
