Fires in Oregon (MODIS 2018-09-27)

Wildfires continued to burn in the green state of Oregon through late September, 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of Oregon and northern California on September 23. Each red "hot spot" marks an area where the thermal bands on the instrument detected areas hotter than background. When combined with typical smoke, as in this image, such hot spots mark actively burning fire. Most of the fires sit near the Oregon-California border. The largest cluster marks both the Klondike and Taylor Fires. The Miles Fire sits in the northwest. The smallest hot spot in the south marks the Natchez Fire, located in California. The Klondike, Taylor, Miles, and Natchez fires all ignited from lightning strikes on July 15, 2018 in Oregon and California. Over 1000 lightning strikes landed in southwest Oregon in the middle of July. Initial fire attack resources caught 98% of the new starts at that time. These four fires, however, were not immediately suppressed and have continued to burn for more than two months. The Klondike Fire is located nine miles northwest of Selma, Oregon, and has consumed 154,663 acres as of Septe
