Glenn Griswold 1936
WITNESS IN WHOLESALE SILICOSIS DEATHS. Philippa Allen, social worker of West Virginia, left, testifies at the House Labor sub-committee investigating 476 deaths from silicosis allegedly contracted by workers employed in building a 3 3/4 mile water diversion tunnel for the New Kanawha Power Company near Gauley Bridge, W. Va. Others in the picture are Rep. Glenn Griswold, D. of Ind., chairman of the sub-committee, and Rep. Vito Marcantonio, R. of N.Y. who instigated the investigation. Miss Allen said the construction company "failed to provide workers with proper safety devices despite the fact that the rock through which they were drilling contained 97 per cent silica." Silica is said to be the cause of the fatal malady which killed 476 workmen and caused illness among 1,500 others who may die.
