Krazy Kat, 7/15/21 *

Photograph shows the Krazy Kat, an art club on Green Court (near Thomas Circle), Washington. D.C. (Source: Washington Times, July 31, 1921) * Description: A young male waiter, wearing a shirt patterned with frolicking cats, ascends a ladder to serve patrons in the treehouse cafe at The Krazy Kat, a bohemian coffee house, art club, and speakeasy. Founded in January 1919 artists by John Ledru Stiffler, Jawne Donn Allen, and Cleon Throckmorton, this notorious Jazz Age speakeasy operated on the Latin Quarter of Washington, D.C. during the early years of Prohibition. In the photograph, artist and model Kathryn Marie Mullin (1902–1994) waits with a friend, possibly Mildred McDonald, for their refreshments. Mullin became a frequent habitue of the club prior to her marriage to Throckomorton in 1922. *; 5 x 7 in. or smaller
