Old Jalopy in Oil City Louisiana
An rusted jalopy sits underneath the old Trees, Louisiana, post office at the Louisiana State Oil and Gas Museum in a now-quiet but once booming town of Oil City. Founded as a railroad flag stop and fishing town near Caddo Lake in the late 1890s, it came to life when oil was discovered in 1905 and raged with activity by 1910, by which time the population had exploded from 100 or so to 25,000 and land prices fro 50 cents to $500 an acre. Between 1905 and 1942, 160 million barrels of oil were pumped from the Oil City-Pine Island field. It's a story recalled in exhibits and photographs at the Oil City Museum in town.
