Ord-Weitzel Gate - Arlington National Cemetery - Arlington VA - 1900
Looking west at the Ord-Weitzel Gate circa 1900 on the northeast border of the northeast corner of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. The gate was named for American Civil War Major Generals Edward Ord and Godfrey Weitzel. Completed in 1879, it was constructed from two Doric columns salvaged from the demolition of the United States War Department Building (now the site of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building). The gate was initially not dedicated to anyone. But by 1902, with the passing of both Ord and Weitzel, their names were inscribed into each column of the gate. Arlington National Cemetery's easternmost boundary had, since 1864, been the Arlington Ridge Road (what is now present-day Eisenhower Drive). In 1971, the cemetery expanded eastward to its present boundary (the Jefferson Davis Highway). At that time, the Ord-Weitzel Gate was dismantled and the columns, marble pediments, and iron gates put into outdoor storage. Unfortunately, the gate was severely damaged during its dismantling. It was further damaged by inappropriate outdoor storage on the cemetery grounds, and has been heavily vandalized.
