Rex parade on Canal Street, Mardi Gras, New Orleans, 1930s. Original caption: "Maskers crowd the streets and sights come and go with breath-taking rapidity on Mardi Gras Day in New Orleans. The street parades consist of from seventeen to twenty lumbering, horse-drawn, glittering, papier mache floats, adorned and bedecked with tinsel. They portray some theme, always emblazoned on the second or title float. The festivities officially start on January 6 and extend through Mardi Gras Day which is "Fat Tuesday, " forty days preceding Easter Sunday. Some thirty bells are given and during the last five days of the Carnival season, scores of street parades and numerous other events take place." (sic; should read "Some thirty balls")
