Salvage crew working on USS Utah (AG-16) 1941
U.S. Navy salvage crews woking on the capsized target ship USS Utah (AG-16) at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (USA), on 7 December 1941. The senior officer on board, Lieutenant Commander Solomon S. Isquith, swam back to the ship which had capsized after being hit by a Japanese torpedo. Commander Isquith, and others, heard a knocking from within the overturned ship's hull. Although Japanese planes were still strafing the area, Isquith called for volunteers to return to the hull and investigate the tapping. Obtaining a cutting torch from the torpedoed light USS Raleigh (CL-7), the men could rescue four trapped crewmen.
