SC 337382 - Here, an enemy machine gun opens up from the far side of the valley. Both men watch intently, trying to spot it. 1 May, 1945.

Border Fight: meeting the first resistance since the Seventh Army bridgehead over the Danube, a Task Force thrusting across the border met a group of O.C.S. students from a nearby school who offered resistance from dug-in positions on the sides of the Alps. Entering Austria, tanks of the 781st Tank Bn., tank destroyers of the 614th TD Bn., and infantry of the 409th Inf. Regt., 103rd Div., all part of a task force spearheading the division's drive into Austria, met the first organized resistance when German troops (students at an OCS nearby) took positions in the high mountains at the German-Austro border and tried to prevent the Task Force's entry into Austria. The Task Force is firing at German positions with rifles, machine guns and 75mm guns mounted on tanks. 7th Army, 781st Tank Battalion, 614th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 1st Battalion, 409th Infantry Regiment, 103rd Infantry Division, VI Corps.
