Sloop Shadow
the Herreshoff sloop Shadow (built in 1871) was the first instance of a "compromise sloop", borrowing a noticeable keel from the British cutters and keeping the beam and lofty rig of yankee sloops. She topped the Eastern Seaboard rankings for over ten years, until she was finally surpassed as the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company focused on steamyachts and torpedo boats for the Navy, instead of sailboats.
