The Carrie Tower at Brown University, one of America's prestigious "Ivy League" colleges
in Providence, the capital of, and largest city in, Rhode Island. The clock tower is a memorial to Caroline Mathilde Brown, grandaughter of the school's founder. Carved into the 95-foot-high tower, designed by Guy Lowell, is is "Love is Strong as Death." After an essential mechanism was removed, perhaps as a prank, the clock ran erratically. Thereafter, its face was fixed at 12:00
