Thomas Butler Gunn Diaries: Volume 21, page 237 with photograph, February 10, 1863

Describes a visit to T. Decatur Harris and his wife Lizzie in New Orleans. Transcription: And her Husband. and, with her husband T. Decatur Harris, told me a good deal about him. Mrs Lizzie Harris went to him first of all, to inquire "if they were to be turned into the street," to which he returned a complimentary negative. The General had subsequently become quite an intimate at the house which did not belong to the Harrises; they were occupying it for the owners, probably "Secesh" refugees. Benjamin F. Butler used to come there and quote poetry by the hour; "Good God! how that man could quote!" exclaimed Harris. Mrs H. said that Butler gave a pass through the lines to a rebel officer, concealed in her house, and I found no difficulty in crediting it. "He refused her nothing." "Why didn't you say it was a friend of yours?" he asked, about somebody liable to be "turned into the street" by his order. Notwithstanding these favors, the lady exhibited to me a scrap-book filled with virulent and abusive attack on the General, acrostics on his name, cari- photograph T. Decatur Harris.
