U.S. bombers hit Japanese ships
A direct hit has just been scored on one of four Japanese cruisers (second from left) taken during a raid by U.S. Army Air Force Liberator bombers on Japanese installations at Macassar in the Dutch East Indies island of Celebs. Smoke for oil fires started during the raid was visible more than 70 miles. The white splash at the stern of the Japanese cruiser is caused by the impact of the bomb landing amidships. Two of the four cruisers shown in the picture were hit, as well as a Japanese cargo vessel.
