{{en|1=Peleliu Island (Sept. 15, 2004) - Commander, U.S. Naval Region Marianas Rear Adm. Arthur J. Johnson, meets and embraces former Japanese soldier Kiyokazu Tsuchida during ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Sept. 1944 Battle of Peleliu. This battle was fought to take the Palau Islands from the Japanese and protect General Douglas MacArthur's flank during his campaign to retake the Philippine Islands during World War II. Tsuchida, who was stationed on Peleliu, hid in the island's caves and jungles for nearly two years after the war and did not surrender to American forces until April of 1947.
