USAAF Douglas C-47s at Ghisonaccia Alzitone airfield, Corsica, France, 28 May 1944

U.S. Army Air Forces Douglas C-47 Skytrain (Douglas C-47-DL 41-7847 at right) used to transport ground crew of the of the 52nd Fighter Group from Aérodrome de Ghisonaccia Alzitone, Haute-Corse, Corsica, France, 28 May 1944. A total of 5 Douglas C-47 transport aircraft can be recognized, as well as a Boeing B-17 Fortress and a Convair B-24 Liberator bomber, which were presumably assigned by various bomber squadrons for transport tasks at short notice. The serial number (Serial s/n) of the B-17 can be recognized as 41-24400, -24406, -24408 or -24409, and identifies a Boeing B-17F-5-BO Fortress of the serial number block 41-24390 to 41-24439. On the airfield in the background you can also see 2 shiny silver single-engine airplanes, most likely North American P-51 Mustang fighters of the 52d Fighter Group.
