Retired Colonel Bob Thompson, who was the commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment during the Battle of Hue City during the Vietnam War, speaks at the Veterans Memorial Garden in the South Mesa Memorial Park Feb. 1. Celebrations commemorating the 1st Marine Division's 65th anniversary included seven members of the 1/5 Vietnam Unit Chapter of the 1st Marine Division Association dedicating a plaque to the Marines of 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. More than 100 members of the 1st Marine Division Association assembled aboard Camp Pendleton for 1st Marine Division's 65th anniversary. Celebrations for the "Blue Diamond's" 65th included live fire exercises, displays of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program and other events, which were held aboard the base Jan. 31 - Feb. 2.
