View of the Blackstone River, by Carol M. Highsmith, 2018, from the - master-pnp-highsm-52500-52552a

View of the Blackstone River, once called "the hardest-working river in America" because of its profusion of mills that drew power from the many falls of on the steeply dropping river from Providence, Rhode Island to Worcester, Massachusetts. This view is in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The building with a tower is the 1790s-vintage Slater Mill, America's first water-powered cotton-spinning mill, modeled after those established in England.
