Pre-WWI photo of an Egyptian Delta Light Railways, close to the Suez Canal, with a Krauss 2-4-0 steam locomotive
A pre-WWI photo of an Egyptian Delta Light Railways, close to the Suez Canal, with probably a Krauss 2-4-0 steam locomotive. Details of the rolling stock Locomotive - probably a narrow gauge Krauss 2-4-0 steam locomotive. (1) – a road van (= covered wagon with section for guard / brakeman). The “bird's nest” or “bird cage” lookout section was common on goods stock in Britain in the early days (latterly only on the North Eastern Railway) and on passenger stock in Germany. The sliding door was fairly common on German-built narrow gauge stock. (2) – a passenger coach. (3) – an open wagon with a central drop door (a typically British feature) to which supports and a roof have been added. Presumably this was one was used to transport camels or horses. (4) – a small and British-looking van with cupboard type doors. Quite a few of these were built for the narrow gauge railways of Ireland. (5) – simliar to (3). (6) – coach appears to be a different shape to coach (2). May be British-built. (7) – similar to (4). (8) – similar to (1).
