US Navy 040709-N-5821W-005 John Hoffpauir, former member of the American 82nd Airborne Division, looks at a monument in Ponte Dirillo, Sicily
{{en|1=Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella, Sicily (July 9, 2004) - John Hoffpauir, former member of the American 82nd Airborne Division, looks at a monument in Ponte Dirillo, Sicily, which lists the names of 39 service members of the American 82nd Airborne Division who lost their lives 61 years ago in Ponte Dirillo during World War II. Electronics Technician 3rd Class Jeffrey Darrington, and Electronics Technician Seaman Justin Line, stand at attention holding the Italian and American flags. Naval Computers and Telecommunication Station (NAVCOMTELSTA) located at NAS Sigonella, hosted a memorial on July 9 honoring these service members for their heroic actions. The memorial sits at the site of a battle that took place between the 82nd and German and Italian forces and is still overlooked by three "pillbox" gun emplacements used by German and Italian forces during the war. NAS Sigonella provides logistics support for Commander, Sixth Fleet and NATO forces in the Mediterranean area of operation. U.S. Navy photo by Journalist 2nd Class Stephen P. Weaver (RELEASED)
