Controversial Uncle Jack Statue, LSU Rural Life Museum

The controversial "Uncle Jack" statue, once standing in Nachitoches, Louisiana, and moved here to the LSU (Louisiana State University) Rural Life Museum in Baton Rouge in 1974. The first monument of an African American to be erected in Louisiana, the 1926 statue depicts a Black man deferentially tipping his hat. References to Black males as "Uncle" have been offensive to many Black citizens since the publication of the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly" in 1852. The statue's plaque, since removed, once read, "In Grateful Recognition of the Arduous and Faithful Service of the Good Darkies of Louisiana."
